Fill Of The Week #20

Here’s the flam-tastic fill of the week.

Who doesn’t love a good flam? This fill has four flams to satisfy all of your flam cravings. Let’s flam away.

Learn The Fill

This is a fairly simple fill, but lets build it up slowly. The place to start is with the basic hand pattern:

Basic hand pattern
Get your hands working and count

Now let’s add in the flams. All the flams are Right flams and are played on the beat. Play this hand pattern slowly and watch your timing on the left hand notes on the “e” of beats 1, 2, & 3.

Once you’re comfortable with the flams, we can add in the floor tom notes. Try this pattern:

Have you met Tom?

The final step is to add the bass drum in the spaces. Here’s the full fill:

Taking It Further

Flams always give us an easy way to vary a fill. By simply splitting the hands up across surfaces we can create new sounding fills. Here’s two simple variations on this fill:

fills with split flams
Split the flams

You can also choose to go back to not playing the bass drum with this fill, that is also a useful variation.

Other than splitting the flam up, we can also move the other notes around. Try these variations:
